Familia PosterRating: N/A

Runtime: 1 hr. 12 minutes

IMDb: 5/10

It is hard to describe Familia without giving away the plot line because it is so simple. Swedish director Mikael Wistrom followed around a Peruvian family and documented their struggle to survive and the sacrifices the mother Naty must go through to keep her family afloat, including becoming a maid in another country.

On the other hand, the emotions that Familia reveals through its intimate angles and filming of private conversations are anything but simple. Throughout the film, you can watch the lines of pain that are drawn across the calloused face of the father as he talks to his wife about their hardships. You can see the years of hard work and constant sacrifice in the drawn bags under Naty’s eyes.

Familia does not really tell us anything that we do not already know, but what it does is it lets us, for a short hour and a half, step into the shoes of someone in another world, and yet, in the case of Naty, also living right next to us.
